General requirements for access to higher education
- Until the late 1980’s / early 1990's a “maturiteitsproef” or maturity examination was organized for students in general, technical and artistic secondary education after the final year of secondary education. In order to gain admission to university level programmes, students had to successfully pass this examination and obtain the "bekwaamheidsdiploma dat toegang verleent tot hoger onderwijs" (aptitude diploma that provides access to higher education).
- Students who wanted to study at a university college or “hogeschool” were not required to pass this examination.
- Students from the vocational upper secondary stream (BSO) didn’t have access to higher education until the school year 1987-1988. From that moment on, these students had access to non-university higher education at "hogescholen".
- the aptitude diploma that provides access to higher education was discontinued in 1991. From this point on, students from all streams had general access to all of higher education.
